We tend to operate in a fairly predictable world which lulls us into thinking that we have more control than we actually do. This has become more evident recently with the recurrent winter storms in the area. One storm after another produced large amounts of snow which resulted in copious amount of snow on the roadways impeding driving for many without 4 wheel drive. Ice dams have caused flooding in homes. Icy cold weather have kept many indoors causing a “cabin fever” of sorts. When things like this happen we realize how little control we have over so many things.
Realizing this lack of control yields a variety of results:
- It can help us bond together to help each other get unstuck from the snow, shovel each other’s driveways, going to pick up groceries for loved ones when their car car is not capable of navigating the roads or loaning your car to someone who would otherwise be stranded.
- It can help us appreciate the everyday conveniences we may take for granted.
- It can help us practice being vulnerable which is especially uncomfortable for many of us.
Bonding together or connecting is a need we humans share. In times of trial many are more able to drop past grievances to help others in need. We all need to feel like we belong, we are loved and we are connected.
Appreciating our daily joys not only trains our brains to see the positive it also helps us to feel happy more hours of the day. Making a habit of appreciating daily the little things in life will yield a fuller, happier life. Try sharing your joys with loved ones to share benefit. Don’t forget to ask them their happies.
Embracing this vulnerability can be empowering especially if you are on who rarely asks for or accepts help. You are worthy and lovable! You deserve to be treated with care and compassion. Give yourself permission to allow others to care for you. In your efficiency of taking care of everyone, you don’t allow others the pleasure of caring for you. Give them this gift. Let them show you the kindness you show them.
Wow, what a way to start out the new year. Your words are inspiring and I thank you. I think sometimes we all forget that God is in control. He will get us through all of this. Seeing what you described, neighbors helping others. It warms my heart. We have been in the house for a month and a half and our neighbors have helped us shovel, get things from the store, push us out when we got stuck trying to get to church. I am very thankful for all of that and for you!!
Love,
Donna
You are the best Donna! I hope all is well with you.
