Often, we feel that we don’t have enough. Not enough money, not enough friends, not enough support, not enough sleep, not enough etc. There is the flip side of this which is too much. Too much stress, too much to do, too much work, too much snow, too much etc. This concept of not being satisfied with what you do have often leads away from being happy.
Use your storytelling abilities to tell a new story about your situation. Remember if we just focused on the facts there would be no emotion about the situation. Instead we tell ourselves that our situation is not as we would like it. If we accepted it is what it is and tell a more empowered story our emotion would improve.
Case in point, I have not been getting the amount of sleep I think I need. I am not too far off from my target but enough that it starts me on a story about how I am not getting enough sleep. The reason I am not sleeping as much is because I am making choices to spend time with loved ones. This is a choice that brings me great joy. My new story is that I get to spend time with loved ones. Just that simple twist in my story changes my feeling of fatigue and exhaustion. Instead, I feel empowered that I have a choice and that I have loved ones whose company I enjoy. What a beautiful perspective. From this vantage point, I feel a sense of love and belonging. Much better than a sense of not enough or too much of what I don’t want.
How can you change your story to get you back to feeling happy and loved?
