Our worlds are so full of activity. We may tend to think we can accomplish more than is possible or more than we can healthfully manage. It is almost a badge of honor to be a multi-tasker. In fact, many employers request that their employees multi task. As it turns out, our brains do better when we focus on one task at a time. When we are focused on one specific task we are able to complete the task more efficiently and more quickly than if we have to keep “shifting gears” to other topics. If you are reading email, read email. If you are on the phone, focus on the conversation.
The next time you have a list of tasks to accomplish, try compiling a list, start with the task with the highest priority and complete it without diverting your attention. See if you are able to complete the list in less time than if you tried to do more than one thing at once. Let us know how it goes.
