Adjusting to Change

Kimberly, June 9, 2016

A woman holds a red umbrella on a fishing pier during a storm.

Weather changes, seasons change, relationships change, life in general changes. We humans like to feel like we have control over our world. When things change that are not according to our plans it reminds us how little control we really have. We will be constantly disappointed if we keep expecting things to go according to plan. In other words, change according to our expectations.  Life’s twists and turns can really be beneficial when we look at them from a different perspective. A more optimistic perspective.  Be curious!

The next time you experience a change that you leaves you feeling less than good, evaluate your expectations. You may ask yourself:

Was I expecting a different outcome?

What can I learn from this outcome?

How can I grow as a result of this circumstance or situation?

What can be fun about this unexpected situation?

What opportunities does this scenario provide that I may like?

How does the loss of this person in my life leave me open for new opportunities? When we lose someone, we increase our compassion which helps us connect to others.

Remember: It is perfectly normal, natural and necessary to grieve great losses in our lives. These questions help us move forward and grow from setbacks, large and small.

Enjoy your next adventure, panned or otherwise.
