Did he know how that would affect me?
We all move about our day with intention even if we are not aware. We intend to get to work on time, we intend to meet our deadlines, we intend to cook dinner without burning it, and so on.
Other people have intentions, too. Sometimes their intentions get in our way. For example, Bob is in a hurry to get back to work from lunch. Linda is driving to meet a client. Bob pulls out into the street relatively close Linda’s car. He didn’t even see her or her car. Linda had to engage her breaks quickly so she could make room for Bob’s truck. Bob was focused on his intention, Linda on hers. The result of these actions could be adverse emotions (fear, anger, etc.) for Linda and stress for Bob. Especially if Bob hit Linda’s car.
What happens when we become aware of our intentions?
If we are aware of our intentions, can we be aware of others intentions, too?
Are they even conscious of why they do?
When we interact with others, consider what their intentions may be. Often they are just trying to do what they need to do while experiencing the least amount of pain as possible, similar to you.
Does this consideration change the story you tell yourself about interactions with others?
How about conversations? Have you ever had a conversation with someone that really upset you in some way? Did you think of their intentions?
Contemplate intention and experiment with different intentions for the day. See what you discover, Share below if you would like. We would love to read your observations.
